God of all seasons, come to us anew on this Sunday morning. As we feel the changing pace of our common lives, let us know again the wonder of your ordered world and your wonderful desires for our fulfillment. We come before you with both anxiety and hope. As we sing and pray, remove our fears and insecurities and give us the assurance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. Amen.
Prayer of Confession:
Gracious and merciful God, we confess that we have worried about possessions and lost sleep over matters beyond our control. We have forgotten you as the source of all good things, and the resource to strengthen us when our energy is drained. Forgive those times we have misused your gifts, and invested our time in vain pursuits. Set us on a new and right path, we pray in the name and by the spirit of Christ our Lord. Amen.
Old Testament Lesson: Deuteronomy 8: 1-3 NRSV (source)
This entire commandment that I command you today you must diligently observe, so that you may live and increase, and go in and occupy the land that the Lord promised on oath to your ancestors. Remember the long way that the Lord your God has led you these forty years in the wilderness, in order to humble you, testing you to know what was in your heart, whether or not you would keep his commandments. He humbled you by letting you hunger, then by feeding you with manna, with which neither you nor your ancestors were acquainted, in order to make you understand that one does not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of the Lord.
Gospel Lesson: John 6: 32-40 NRSV (source)
Then Jesus said to them, “Very truly, I tell you, it was not Moses who gave you the bread from heaven, but it is my Father who gives you the true bread from heaven. For the bread of God is that which comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.” They said to him, “Sir, give us this bread always.” Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never be hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty. But I said to you that you have seen me and yet do not believe. Everything that the Father gives me will come to me, and anyone who comes to me I will never drive away; for I have come down from heaven, not to do my own will, but the will of him who sent me. And this is the will of him who sent me, that I should lose nothing of all that he has given me, but raise it up on the last day. This is indeed the will of my Father, that all who see the Son and believe in him may have eternal life; and I will raise them up on the last day.”
