God of love and healing, you freed us from our chains by revealing the way of faith in Jesus Christ. Through our baptism, you accepted us as your sons and daughters and clothed us in the love of Christ. We welcome your presence as we lift our lives to you, and open our souls to your renewing Sprit, through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.
Prayer of Confession:
Most holy and merciful God, we acknowledge and confess before Thee; our sinful nature, prone to evil and slothful in good; and all our shortcomings and offenses. Thou alone knowest how often we has sinned; in wandering from Thy ways; in wasting Thy gifts; in forgetting Thy love. But Thou, O Lord, have pity upon us; who are ashamed and sorry for all wherein we have displeased Thee. Teach us to hate our errors; cleanse us from our secret faults; and forgive our sins for the sake of Thy dear Son. And O most holy and loving God; help us we beseech Thee; to live in Thy light and walk in Thy ways; according to the commandments of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
Psalter Lesson: Psalm 10: 12-18 NRSV (source)
Rise up, O Lord; O God, lift up your hand; do not forget the oppressed. Why do the wicked renounce God, and say in their hearts, “You will not call us to account”? But you do see! Indeed you note trouble and grief, that you may take it into your hands; the helpless commit themselves to you; you have been the helper of the orphan. Break the arm of the wicked and evildoers; seek out their wickedness until you find none. The Lord is king forever and ever; the nations shall perish from his land. O Lord, you will hear the desire of the meek; you will strengthen their heart, you will incline your ear to do justice for the orphan and the oppressed, so that those from earth may strike terror no more.
Epistle Lesson: Hebrews 12: 1-2; 12-15 NRSV (source)
Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight and the sin that clings so closely, and let us run with perseverance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus the pioneer and perfecter of our faith, who for the sake of the joy that was set before him endured the cross, disregarding its shame, and has taken his seat at the right hand of the throne of God. Therefore lift your drooping hands and strengthen your weak knees, and make
straight paths for your feet, so that what is lame may not be put out of joint, but rather be healed. Pursue peace with everyone, and the holiness without which no one will see the Lord. See to it that no one fails to obtain the grace of God; that no root of bitterness springs up and causes trouble, and through it many become defiled.
